As of the present time, the majority are first confused about the difference between Millennials and Generation Z.
To fully understand this agony, the ages included within the millennial bracket are ages 23 to 38 while within Generation Z are ages 7 to 22. So now, where do you belong?
Talking about these brackets, it is very calming to say and sense that these ages are the so-called youngsters of the generation. Being part of the young ones can help you get a lighter and younger sense of vibe and environment. Ironically, some of the older generations wish to still stay young yet the reality is reality.
When it comes to reality, being young or being part of these brackets doesn’t mean LUCK all the time. Let us correlate this to Filipino millennials that are also very open to such luck and out-of-luck scenarios.
Although being a part of these brackets is a big factor when it comes to attracting blessings and other forms of luck, still there are certain scenarios wherein these have been an issue.
There are factors outside the positive sense of age that have been misjudged and taken negatively towards Millennial and Generation Z. It has been a part of their reality that not all the time, being young is valuable to the environment or even the world we are in.
The society we have now is very critical in all senses. From age to social class, working class, political views, and more that also causes challenges to Filipino millennials. These are getting very crucial when we start to venture our own path outside our comfort zone. We invest our whole selves, from our dreams, dignity, and our stand to the industry we want to take. We invest so much for the sake of our dreams.
We thought at first that experiences and entitlement are not just based on the sense of age. We believe that regardless of age, we are equal to all of the opportunities and tribulations, challenges and triumphs. From then on, we start to breathe courage and enter the corporate world even though we are still young compared to other professionals.
Realistically, it is both advantageous and disadvantageous to be a part of the Millennial and Generation Z brackets.
The most common advantage of being part of these is that the energy, enthusiasm, time, and capacity to adapt are much wider and faster than the older generation. Thus, the world can revolve so much easier and more effectively from time to time; basically seen in the workplace.
On the contrary, the most common disadvantage of being a Millennial or under the Generation Z bracket is that you are treated as someone who is very vocal and entitled to opportunities available; also mostly seen in the workplace.
As they say, one should carry the work ethic to make the work and the workplace work for everyone. So, what is work ethic?
Work ethic is the standard or a set of standards of belief and attitudes that one worker should embody, practice, and apply what should and should not be done at work. Work ethic can be strong or bad.
As to a strong work ethic, it is a behavior wherein the higher-level sense of passion can be seen in a worker. On the other hand, a bad work ethic is a behavior wherein there is a low level of passion and professionalism inside work.
Due to this and out of all possible scenarios, the scenarios inside the workplace are where the advantages and disadvantages of being a millennial or generation Z can be mostly seen. Therefore, every workplace can effectively use one millennial or generation Z’s power while they can also use it against them.
Advantages of Being a Millennial or Generation Z Worker
Highly-Educated
Millennials and Generation Z are very driven when it comes to education or studies. They are said to be more high-spirited when it comes to attaining a degree. This is due to the fact that these brackets aim to enter the corporate world that requires massive educational attainment. Thus, they crave a wider or higher level of education that makes them a little bit entitled to their knowledge and experiences given by their degree.
Proficient in Technology
This is related to being highly educated. For a reason that their education is way better or higher than the others, their technological proficiency is way more evident in the workplace. Their capability to adapt to modernization is faster than the older generations.
Willingness to Collaborate is High
Their generation is very much open to learning and being trained. This led to their willingness to collaborate with other workers, their superiors, and other professionals to gain more knowledge and experience with regard to the nature of their work. Their participation is very high.
Flexible
It is indeed obvious that the younger generations are very much flexible than the older generation. Their capacity to multi-task is very useable in every workplace making the workloads a lot easier and faster to finish. Their body’s strength, time, and energy are much healthier than the older ones, thus making them efficient employees.
Non-complacent
Millennials and Generation Z always strive to do better day by day. They still value maintaining who they are in the time being yet they always look for ways to be their better or best selves tomorrow and for the future. They look for opportunities wherein they can make their selves evolve and learn new things that will benefit them and their career.
The millennial and generation Z’s tendency to provide the best performance at work is somewhat taken negatively. Some who can’t handle the fast-phased transition of the way of work from these generations are taking this as the sense of entitlement. They think that doing and giving more than what is expected and traditional is in the sense of attention-seeking and entitlement to achievements and capacities. Rather than being considered “entitled”, millennials and Generation Z are just doing what needs to be done in its best form always.
Disadvantages of Being a Millennial or Generation Z Worker
Impatience to Career-Growth
As the younger generation always dreams to have their career figured out as soon as they want, they tend to hop from one job to another. Believing that their current job doesn’t give the job satisfaction that they want for their career, they became too impatient to wait for their growth within their current job.
Feedback Dependency
With the sense of growth, feedbacks are very much helpful to know where and what to improve. One of its disadvantages is that they depend on the kind of feedback they are receiving. They tend to use it as their path to what certain part they should just improve instead of doing it marginally.
Lack of Experience
With the fact that Millennial and Generation Z are considered the young ones, their experiences are much smaller than the older generation. This leaves a gap of enough capacity to provide strong proof of work experiences that is valuable to the position.
Imposes Entitlement
Since millennials and generation Z are very dedicated to improving and imparting change in every situation, they are treated as entitled ones. They take this enthusiasm as a means of entitlement that is giving them the negative approach to the said brackets.
Technology or Internet-Dependent
Compared to the older generation, the millennial and generation Z are more familiar with technologies or the impact of modernization in every workplace. Thus, they tend to decline the important factors brought by the tradition or the common practices in the industry.
