Recognizing E-sport as a Sport: Thriving Online Games

Jun 03, 2022

When someone thinks of an athlete, they do not picture someone sitting in front of a computer playing video games in their condo living area. Instead, the stereotype is frequently connected with someone who is not physically fit and lacks athletic talents. In some situations, people may refer to a gamer as a nerd or equate it with nerd culture. However, games played online should be considered a sport. Video games and their play are rooted in competition, including athletic talent, need preparation and physical effort, take place in stadiums, and are cheered on by ardent fans. Competitive online gamers begin to show the same athletic abilities as traditional athletes. Online game concepts have also evolved. People are starting to play this online game competitively in events that closely mimic sports competitions rather than just for fun. That is one of the main reasons mobile legends on sea games started to earn recognition.

In the 31st SEA Games, Team Philippines, also known as SIBOL Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, retains their title in the sea games ranking on mobile legends. SIBOL MLBB demolished Team Indonesia in a best-of-five (BO5) series, which ended 3-1. The SIBOL MLBB lineup includes Johnmar "PHI VILLA LUNA" Villaluna, Danerie "PHI DEL ROSARIO" Del Rosario, Salic "Hadji" Imam, and Dexter "PHI ALABA" Alaba, all of whom are veterans from Blacklist International. Kyle "PHI SOTO" Soto, Howard "PHI GONZALES" Gonzales, and Russel "PHI USI" Usi were all amateur gamers who had never played in any Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional Leagues or competitions.

SIBOL MLBB 2022 climbs the heights and lays their claim on mobile legends on sea games supremacy for the Philippines in Southeast Asia after a dominant SEA Games 2022 run! According to Esports Charts, the 31st SEA Games MLBB event attracted a new top concurrent viewership of 2.2 million, with an average of 610,000 viewers. The Philippines and Indonesia were finalists in the 30th SEA Games Mobile Legends: Bang Bang in 2019, with the Philippines emerging victorious with a 3:2 match score.

SIBOL MLBB 2022 sea games ranking on mobile legends has earned another feat as they home another gold medal and achievement for our country. With this, Esports may become more mainstream due to the pandemic when everyone found their hobbies in their apartment and condo living space. Due to the unusual and unintentional embrace of esports by broadcasters, leagues, and athletes looking to attract fans, analysts have described esports as being popularized and legitimized in an unforeseen and profound way. A protracted closure for traditional sports leagues may regularly push more people to esports among younger demographic groupings.

At the very least, the pandemic has reminded media firms and brands that there is still a market of highly engaged people to be addressed. Recent events are expected to propel esports into the mainstream. However, how does E-sport become similar to the traditional sports we have right now?

Let's start by testing the concept against some of the most commonly used adjectives when considering the definition of "sport": competition, entertainment, and athletic ability;

Competition, Wins, and Losses.

This is one of the most straightforward arguments. Competition is the cornerstone of any sport. To win, a team or individual competes against another group or individual. As a result, it's not a leap to call internet games competitive. There will be competition in any online game, but notably in those where players compete against one another.

Athletic Ability.

What athletic skills do online gamers players possess? While video games do not necessitate as many skills as other sports, they share one important one: coordination. Video game players require coordination to strike at the precise time, synchronizing the technique they use on their controller with whatever their eyes perceive unfolding in front of them, just like they need coordination to catch a 90 MPH baseball in a glove or hit one with a bat. What about responsiveness, last but surely not least? It's a skill necessary by almost any fast-moving athlete, and it is needed by online gamers too.

Practice, Dedication, and Training.

The key is that there are several levels of an activity in which one can participate; with different tiers of competence and expertise. The story you and I participated in would most likely be regarded as the lowest. And training does not only entail playing more games; there is undoubtedly that, but there is much more to it. Many eSports competitors engage in physical and strength training to avoid frequent eSports injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome or tennis elbow. Of course, there's also training to help with coordination and responsiveness. Nutrition and hydration are also important considerations.

The advantages of creating an eSports team go beyond saving money for the university as a low-cost sport; ESports can also produce revenue for the participants. If the eSports athletes win events, the money is transferred to the student's scholarship. The subsidized funds will save the institution money that may be used to fund other student-athletes. The institution can also obtain sponsorship funds from various organizations that do not typically sponsor athletics.

The pandemic has created an unprecedented situation with far-reaching health, social, and economic ramifications. Financial markets crashed at the onset of the pandemic, albeit not all sectors were affected equally. The gaming and eSports industries are among those that have borne the brunt of the market decline. Millions of bored people stressed and agonized at home gave gaming and eSports industries a boost in the first half of 2020. This significance has sparked interest in determining which elements can influence the results in a financially more vital sector than many others.

However, unlike in other countries, esports is still not considered mainstream entertainment in the Philippines. The success of esports in the Philippines will be determined by how private players and the government invest in tournaments and other sports-related activities. This session will examine how industry participants and the government can reinvent the Philippine esports environment, converting potential into exponential numbers and positioning the industry for future success.
