We are now on our third Labor Day in quarantine here in the Philippines. Although the COVID-19 restrictions have now quite loosened up and the alert levels from all over the country have now been lowered compared to last year, most of us would still feel better and safer staying inside our condo living.
The Labor Day celebration is one of the holidays where its meaning and purpose have been lost throughout the years. Some of us may have forgotten to celebrate this day and take this chance to spend some quality time with our friends, work colleagues, family, and—of course, let's never forget—our own selves. So invite your loved ones inside your condo this May 1 and make the best out of it!
What is Labor Day in the Philippines?
If you were asked this question: Why is Labor Day a holiday? Will you be able to answer it well? For those who need to understand more about this day, let me explain why we celebrate this national holiday every May 1.
Also known as "Araw ng mga Manggagawa," Labor Day in the Philippines has a profound significance. On May 1, this international holiday is observed. It is most usually connected with commemorating the labor movement's successes. The festival is also known as International Workers' Day or May Day, and it is observed as a public holiday in more than 80 nations.
May 1 is just another day off to rest and unwind for some. However, for many, Labor Day represents a centuries-long struggle for the advancement of the working class. Labor Day was originally marked in the Philippines on May 1, 1903, when 100,000 laborers marched through Malacañang seeking better working conditions from the then-American-led government. Since its inception in 1886, Labor Day has been recognized as a Day of Protest, Workers' Solidarity, and skirmishes between the laboring class and the government worldwide on May 1.
The goal of Labor Day was to unite workers in the fight for better working conditions. It has subsequently become a national holiday, with Filipinos flocking to the beaches or hiking in the mountains.
Celebrating Labor Day with Self or with Loved Ones
As said before, this day only comes once a year. Thus, spending the national holiday wisely and making the most of it is essential. Whether you're alone in your condo and just having some quality time alone or hanging out with your work colleagues, friends, families, or other loved ones, Labor Day is a chance to unwind while keeping in mind its significance.
Although labor unions founded Labor Day, the desire to recognize work and career extends beyond unionized businesses. As a worker, you are making a difference in the world while also supporting yourself and your family, and this needs to be recognized on a particular day. Furthermore, it's critical to take time off, whether it's a weekend escape or a vacation, or just a stay inside your condo holiday celebration.
One of the advantages of commemorating any holiday (including Labor Day) is that it allows us to eat or share a meal with the people around us. Whether it's a BBQ, a formal dinner, or a catered event, the food alone will offer you a reason to discuss with folks you don't get to share a meal with as often as you'd like. We can spend any time of the day doing something (or nothing) with the people we cherish and feel happy to be with.
Most people have free weekends, so one option to make the most of your Saturday, Sunday, and Labor Day is to take one last trip with your loved ones. You might also want to throw a few different parties or spend some time visiting family and friends who would be difficult to see on other days of the year.
Labor Day is generally celebrated with parades, parties, public gatherings, picnics, and many more. These celebrations are similar to how Labor Day was celebrated when it was first established years ago. Activists would conduct street parades to demonstrate the strength and accomplishments of labor unions back then.
Today, everyone has now a manner of commemorating Labor Day. On the other hand, employees typically use the day off to rest, recharge, and celebrate with their loved ones. While the celebrations have been toned down due to circumstances, the essential meaning of Labor Day remains unmistakable: a reminder of how essential the working class is to the country and how significant their contributions have been to our country.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, celebrating outside our condo living has been lessened. But as long as we're celebrating it joyfully, we can have our own fun and enjoyment even if we're just inside our condo. Who knows? Maybe there are more ways to celebrate indoors than we thought.
Let's take this time to appreciate our hard work and take some heavy load off. If you're staying in your condo alone this holiday, we suggest you turn on the television and binge-watch some movies, cook a delicious, healthy meal to satisfy your cravings, play games, lie down, rest, or even have a massage to loosen up your muscles. If you want to celebrate with your family, friends, or loved ones, feel free to invite them to your condo and have a get-together! You can even resort to online calls or conferences if ever they cannot travel all the way to you. This is to celebrate your hard work, so have a Labor Day celebration that is fully catered to yourself.
Said, Labor Day is a day to celebrate you. It commemorates us. It honors everyone who has contributed to the Philippines' laboring.
While some may not appreciate Labor Day in the same way that they do Thanksgiving or Christmas, it is still a day to spend with your family. Not to add that it was established for a significant and historical reason.
Whatever your circumstances, there are pleasant ways to celebrate this official holiday, and it can all be done in the comfort of your own home or condo living. So don't worry, you can still bring out the celebrating spirit in various ways. Let's not forget what Labor Day is and why Labor Day Celebration is essential.
We are celebrating Labor Day this year with all professionals and employees all over the Philippines—even the world. We hope you know how much you are appreciated and thanked for your labor and working journey. Happy Labor Day!
