The iPhone 14 is here and has a lot to show you, but is the new iPhone 14 Pro worth it? (base models included). Let's find out if these new Apple products in 2022 cut as one of the most eligible brands this year to invest. Launching this October 14, 2022, the iPhone 14 will be readily available in the Philippine Market. Thus, read more to be informed if you're thinking of an upgrade and purchase iPhone 14.
Everyone's friend: The Apple iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus
The new models are slightly thicker than their predecessors, with a 0.3-inch increase in thickness for the iPhone 14 and an increase of 0.4 inches for the iPhone 14 Plus. The weight has also increased by about two ounces for both models, but this is negligible compared to other features of these phones (see below).
Both phones now have an edge-to-edge screen that wraps around both sides of the device while keeping the Home button on the front face of each device. Both versions have a similar design to previous models: rounded corners with curved edges at almost every angle possible; stainless steel and aluminum edges; glass backs; and a silver band around the edge that runs up one side of each device (iPhone 14) or down one side (iPhone 14 Plus), so to compare iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 14 when it comes to their hardware is a no brainer - unless it's software related.
Features
Apple advanced these base models with various user-facing changes and quality-of-life enhancements despite the limited exterior modifications. Customers have a clear throughline for features and pricing from top to bottom across the entire iPhone 14 Pro portfolio, despite more major modifications that increased the difference between pro and base models.
Design
Comparing iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 14 looks almost identical, except for a few minor color alterations. The aluminum chassis, diagonal rear camera system, and notch are similar. 460ppi is seen on the 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display.
Despite being a new model, the larger iPhone 14 Plus shares all of the features with the smaller device, including the same-sized camera hump. It has a 6.7-inch, 458ppi Super Retina XDR display. But unlike the pro model size, it is simulating; it lacks ProMotion.
The displays feature HDR, True Tone, and a P3 color gamut, just like the iPhone 13. In typical operation, the OLED gives a contrast ratio of 2 million to 1 and a brightness level of 800 nits.
The only significant design difference is the U.S. version of the device's lack of a SIM card slot. Users won't have to worry about physical cards any longer, thanks to Apple's full commitment to e-SIM compatibility.
Camera
Apple added a larger 12MP sensor with a wider f/1.5 aperture to the newly renamed Main Camera, formerly known as the Wide Camera. This makes it possible to take better images and perform in low light more quickly. This represents a 49% improvement in low light, according to Apple.
The addition of an f/1.9 aperture and autofocus enhances the selfie camera. The selfie camera can take better pictures more quickly when coupled with the depth sensors used for Face ID.
The chipset enhancements also allow 4K filming when using Cinematic Mode. Users can choose between 30 and 24 frames per second to benefit from improved camera performance.
Emergency SOS via satellite
The newest iPhones might link to satellite miles above the Earth's surface without the use of a massive antenna module, thanks to special antennas and equipment built by Apple. This technology is primarily designed for use in emergency situations.
A user can activate Emergency SOS via satellite to send out a distress signal as long as they have a good view of the sky or are beneath some light vegetation. The tool will guide the user through prompts to make sure that communication is succinct but detailed.
The user interface on display will inform them in which direction to aim their iPhone for the optimum satellite signal. The relaying time for messages transmitted using this approach can range from 15 seconds to several minutes.
Ports and battery life
Thanks to greater efficiency, the battery life was extended.
Apple claims that the battery life has increased, putting the 6.1-inch iPhone's usage time at 20 hours. The iPhone 14 Plus has 26-hour battery life.
Both devices feature rapid charging, which is officially rated at 20W. Therefore, you can charge the iPhone to 50% in around 30 minutes by plugging it into a 20W charger. As with earlier generations, MagSafe accessories and charging are also supported.
Processors
It boasts a 5-core GPU, allowing for better processing throughout the system and in some apps. Because of this upgraded processor, the iPhone 14 now has access to the improved 4K Cinematic Mode.
Face ID is still hidden behind the same-sized notch as the iPhone 13 and hasn't received an upgrade. However, iOS 16 now allows users to unlock their iPhone 14 in either portrait or landscape mode.
The U1, 5G, and WiFi connectivity were not changed for the iPhone 14 series. Apple did, however, add the more recent Bluetooth 5.3 specification. Although Bluetooth 5.3 is also used by the AirPods Pro 2, no details were given on its advantages.
The Pro's choice: iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max
The new Apple iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are stunning devices that offer some of the fastest and most powerful technology you can buy, but their incredible design really sets these phones apart. The front of each phone features a glass back panel with a glossy finish that gives the phone an impressive shine. The back panel also has a matte finish, which lends itself to an even more premium look.
With almost a thousand pesos at stake, which is just as big as condo investing, let's see if this enormous amount satisfies itself.
Pro Features
Apple was able to maintain a straightforward upgrade path from the least expensive model to the most expensive one despite the iPhone portfolio being more diverse than ever. The iPhone 14 Pro variants stand out for their advancements in the camera and display, which distinguish them from other models.
A design perfect for every Pro
The possible hues are deep purple, silver, gold, and space black.
This generation's camera hump is a little greater, if only because all of the lenses have been improved. The protrusion will prevent cases from earlier models from fitting, and the dimensions are also a little bit larger.
In the devices it offered in the U.S., Apple omitted the SIM card slot. Customers will use the e-SIM capability instead to access cellular providers.
The location of the buttons, speakers, Lightning port and Face ID are identical. A small pill-shaped feature has replaced the notch, and the display has shorter bezels and more touchable surface space.
The Dynamic Island
Apple decided to use a novel option called Dynamic Island for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Apple allegedly planned to cover the Face ID sensors with a "pill and hole cutout," which did indeed happen.
Apple decided to hide these distinct components via an interactive user interface (U.I.) rather than present them separately. The dynamic Dynamic Island hides the Face ID cutout while displaying notifications, Live Activities, and other information.
Press and hold the Dynamic Island to see a U.I. overlay, or tap to launch the currently displayed app. For instance, holding down the button while music is playing will display the play/pause and skip buttons over the current user interface.
Always-on Display
The iPhone 14 Pro may now make use of its variable refresh rate display to keep it always on, just like the Apple Watch did before it. The iPhone can maintain information on the display at all times by reducing the refresh rate to 1Hz, utilizing a darkened backdrop, and employing darker U.I. elements.
Apple created the always-on display to consume the least amount of electricity while still showing current information. The clock, widgets, and Live Activities will all continue to refresh often.
Some of Apple's Lock Screen backgrounds have a completely distinct appearance for the always-on mode. The clownfish wallpaper, for instance, develops a green night vision appearance. Using machine learning, other wallpapers, such as those produced from pictures, will intelligently dim. According to Apple, photos with humans will maintain skin tones even when they are muted.
The display will switch off when the iPhone is placed face down or in a pocket to conserve battery life. The display can also brighten up to 2,000 nits in direct sunlight for increased visibility.
All-on will be turned off when you use the Sleep Focus, along with CarPlay, Continuity Camera, and Low Power Mode. When an Apple Watch user moves away from their iPhone, the always-on depending on proximity feature is disabled.
Cameras
All four cameras were enhanced for the iPhone 14 Pro to let in more light, and the A16 Bionic features a better picture signal processor. Every picture pops thanks to larger image sensors, a 48MP Main Camera, and the new Photonic Engine.
In order to move the Deep Fusion process earlier in the pipeline, Apple made changes. For more realistic images, this saves color and texture information.
Before now, Deep Fusion was presented as a technique to enhance the detail in medium light images. The iPhone captures several still photos and merges them into one clear, well-exposed picture.
With bigger, brighter sensors, the function may now be used in more lighting scenarios and in darker surroundings.
Processors fit for Pro
The A16 Bionic has a 17 trillion operation per second Neural Engine, a 6-core CPU, and a 5-core GPU. These specifications result in a speedier, more effective iPhone.
Apple stayed with Face ID as their biometric verification method. The proximity sensor is placed below the display, and a smaller sensor stack is used.
5G, U1 Ultra Wideband, and WiFi 6 all remain the same. Bluetooth 5.3, which delivers more bandwidth, was upgraded by Apple. Although Bluetooth 5.3 is also used by the AirPods Pro 2, its advantages are not yet well understood.
Is the new iPhone 14 pro worth it?
Technology is changing, and tech companies continue innovating products that make every user's life efficient. But what is important to note is that you need this now. Is it better if you put your money into something relevant, like, perhaps, condo investing? If so, these newly released Apple products in 2022 can wait, or better yet, just wait for another year and see if the next lineup is finally for you.
