This year's Coachella included many Asian singers and performers of Asian heritage. The iconic music event returns to the Colorado Desert in California on the weekends of April 15 to 17 and April 22 to 24 after being canceled because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The most memorable moments of the first weekend were in the segment produced by 88Rising, an Asian-focused music label. For the first time since 2015, the legendary second-generation K-pop girl group took the stage as a quartet prior of their disbandment in 2016. At the end of CL's set, Bom, Sandara, and Minzy joined her for a deadly performance of their 2011 song "I Am the Best" and turned it into a 2ne1 comeback stage. 2NE1 awakened after seven years of agony and decided to give us all we wanted and more in their surprise Coachella 2022 performance. Remember their impromptu performance during MAMA? They last performed as a group in 2015, when they astonished audiences before disbanding a year later.
Who is 2ne1?
"Hello. What's up? We're 2NE1!" this has become the tagline of 2ne1, a four-member girl group under YG Entertainment. On May 6, 2009, they debuted with the single "Fire." Their name is pronounced, "To anyone" or "Twenty-one". It stands for "New Evolution of the Twenty-First Century." Prior to their debut, the group collaborated on the commercial song "Lollipop" with labelmates BIGBANG in 2009.
In late 2008, the group was initially discussed in the press. CL, Bom, and Minzy were supposed to form a trio when it was first planned. Dara, the fourth member, was then added, and the quartet was shown in its full shape in the video for "Lollipop." In 2010, YG Entertainment CEO Yang Hyun Suk revealed that current members Bom and Dara would be placed in a group with actress and labelmate Ku Hye Sun.
Why did 2ne1 Disband?
Many have been curious why one of the most phenomenal girl group who leads K-pop into the international stage has ended its career. Why did 2ne1 disband?
With Minzy's departure from the group in April 2016, the group's disintegration began. The group went on without Minzy for a period, but he returned in November 2016. Initially, the band agreed to stay together as a trio until Bom's contract expired. Bom officially quit the group after Minzy in November, however, Dara and CL remained under YG Entertainment. With their song "Goodbye," Dara, CL, and Bom gathered together to say their final goodbyes to their fans all around the world, and the song even topped the Billboard digital chart. The group's fracturing is thought to have begun with Bom's involvement in the drug case. Finally, they all agree that letting go of a broken piece is preferable to holding it tightly. They all should have pursued their separate careers. 2ne1 debut song 'Fire' has become their trademark that earns many awards, popularity, and achievements in their careers. It was followed by many hit singles and albums that kept them in the spotlight.
2ne1 Playlist you can Listen to Inside your Condo.
I Don't Care.
2ne1 comeback stage for their single hit song 'I Don't Care' The reggae-inspired beat was a welcome addition to 2NE1's early sound, but the verses fall too flat in a song where the most remarkable part was the super-simple chorus. This will boost your energy while doing household chores at home.
Fire.
2ne1 debut song that started it all. Over thrilling, glittering synthesizers, the band's leader began the band's debut tune by proclaiming, "I go by the name of CL of 2NE1." With this track as our proper introduction, "Fire" laid the basis for much of the act's following songs — catchy electro-pop bangers with plenty of attitudes. Indeed, no one will miss out on this song.
Falling in Love.
"Falling in Love" was a charming, reggae-lite bop for the 2NE1 girls when it was released, but it didn't really bring anything new to the table for the group, despite Dara sounded as if she had discovered a new burst of confidence. This song is perfect for spending your summer, might it be inside or outside your condo.
Ugly.
"Ugly" is one of the most unexpected tracks in the group's discography, which opens with simple electro-pop production before diving into its rock-out chorus, where the band deprecatingly yells the lyrics, "Just like her I wanna be pretty, I wanna be pretty, don't lie to my face, 'Cause I know I'm ugly." You can indeed sing this song at the top of your lungs while taking some rest from the stress.
Goodbye.
The first (and only) release for 2NE1 as a trio is a smokey, heartbreak ballad that matches up to the rest of the group's impressive record. The superwoman personalities have vanished, and instead, the members scream, "Does anyone know?" Is there anyone who understands how I feel?" over strums on a guitar? CL co-wrote the song and explained that it was originally written as a tribute to Minzy, making it all the more tragic.
Come Back Home.
"Come Back Home" embraced snappy trap production with a throwback to their reggae days, as they often do when it comes to new trends. Trap and reggae components are prevalent in today's top tracks, and 2NE1 was at the forefront of this trend in 2014. Surely everyone will groove and dance when hearing this song.
Missing You.
While "Goodbye" is heartfelt, the best 2NE1 ballad is "Missing You," which, while slow and gentle at its core, features unexpected electronic flourishes and harmonies until its soaring guitar line wonderfully transforms into pounding piano chords for the ladies to belt over. CL originally spoke to Billboard about the song in 2013, saying it served as a message to fans she hadn't seen in a long time, and we believe fans will find more consolation listening to this beautiful song than the heartbreaking "Goodbye."
Gotta Be You.
Crush's underappreciated second song hinted at the fascinating new paths 2NE1 may have gone if they had stayed together longer. Minzy effortlessly belted with the group's primary vocalist Bom on the trappy, synth-pop tune, which was bordering on uber-trendy house music.
Lonely.
A track that demonstrated the group's softer side, revealing that beneath their dazzling outfits, there were four ladies capable of portraying vulnerability as well as ferocity, with this single-serving as proof.
I Am The Best.
K-pop's song owes a lot to the group's worldwide journey for this utter behemoth of a pop smash. The beat still sounds fresh in 2017, which explains why major businesses and American radio stations embraced it years after its introduction. The song, which is one of the most recognized K-pop songs globally, refers to 2NE1's reputation as a whole act, with each woman proving why she is a crucial element of this perfect-pop product by becoming a superstar on her own. What makes you think it's not number one?
Fans worldwide rejoiced when they announced their reunion after playing at Coachella. It was also a "what if" moment — what if 2NE1 had never stopped performing? Whatever could be the answer, we know that they'll be in charge of whatever this Coachella reunion leads to, as they try to be the best they can, as the song goes.
