They say that your home is a reflection of your personality. If you're the kind of person who gets such joy and serenity from simply gazing at paintings and if you've daydreamed about having an art-museum type of home, maybe this is the sign to decorate your place with breathtaking pieces of art. Buy (or even create your own) paintings and showcase the aesthetics of your condo living with it—It gives you the feeling that your home is a well-curated art exhibition!

However, decorating the interior of your condo is not done with just putting up paintings and various arts on your wall. Let's say that this is a commitment: you also need to know how to maintain your paintings. You wouldn't want a beautifully created (and one that may even be expensive) to go to waste, right? More than just an accent to your home, these kinds of art need to be taken care of.

Here are a few tips that will help you know more about art painting maintenance in your condo.

How to Take Care of Paintings

Framing

Making sure your artwork, primarily paintings, are properly framed is the first essential step in protecting it.

The foundation of protecting artwork is a high-quality frame. Before putting your painting on display and hanging it on the walls, make sure that it is framed properly because this affects how long the works of art will last, whether it's a canvas, paper, or photograph. Invest in a proper quality frame for its longevity and protection because if you don't put it in an appropriate structure, it could seriously harm your artwork. There are different types of glass to choose from, so be sure to select which best protects your painting.

Take note, however, that framing is not recommended for all types of paintings, so better check out what's appropriate for the artwork you have first.

Displaying

Before fully displaying your paintings, remember that where they are displayed essentially matters. Positioning your artwork is highly essential, so don't try to overlook it and place your framed work anywhere you think is good.

Firstly, avoid putting your art in direct sunlight. As much as it may look pretty with light streaks, Bright sunlight does not do well for artwork. Even harder pigments in oils or acrylics will fade over time. Still, watercolors and other works on paper are especially vulnerable to color bleaching or surface damage when exposed to direct sunshine.

Secondly, keep your artwork out of the areas where there may be frequent changes in temperature, moisture content, or humidity because these factors can affect your paintings negatively. You should keep your paintings away from heating and cooling sources like fireplaces, air vents, radiators, and air conditioning systems. Remember that powerful heat sources can cause warping or discoloration to various materials in kitchens or areas with open fireplaces or radiators. Also, consider the heat produced by the ceiling lights you are utilizing, as this could eventually harm your work. Make sure there is enough space between your artwork and any high-wattage lighting if you plan to use it. Even if framed, there are instances where moisture could come through your painting, and if it's on paper, it could lead to fading tearing.

Lastly, keep youngsters and pets away from your artwork and take extra care where you place it. Although it might seem common sense, it's crucial to keep them away from curious children and wagging tails. A fallen object caused by accidental bumps would not only harm the thing itself, but it would also hurt the little children. Ensure that your artwork is shown in safe, secure areas away from household traffic. Hang your paintings up where your kids can't reach them. Consider using a display cabinet for complicated pieces or precious paintings to provide an additional layer of security and peace of mind.

Caring

Your painting maintenance does not end here after you finish displaying it. You would want to ensure that your paintings stay in good condition even after time passes.

If your artwork is behind glass, the process for cleaning frames is the same as that for washing windows or mirrors. You may use a window glass spray (don't use water), a kitchen paper towel, or a microfiber cloth. However, remember that using a moist towel to clean the glass is not advised. Doing so risks damaging the glass over time, obstructing your view, and leaving marks on the glass. Lastly, keep in mind to periodically dust out the backs of the frames to prevent any debris from damaging your priceless artwork.

If your paintings are unframed, on the other hand, remember to dust—not clean—your paintings. Don't use any cleaners or solvents on the surface to clean it; just lightly dust it off instead with a sable brush or a soft feather duster. (If flaking paint is present, do not dust it!)

Be Smart in Maintaining Art

Art is an expression of freedom, and you are free to stray from the norm. You don't have to restrict yourself to expensive paintings because there are so much more than just things you hang on the wall—like furniture, figurines, sentimental objects, or even just painting your condo walls to give out the vibe you want to achieve in your home. When you have your own condo to live in, you would like to decorate and style the place to match you and your interests. Besides giving your home its persona, it's also pleasing to the eyes to see some artwork and decorations in your environment. After all, a pleasant environment also lifts your mood. However, if you want to maintain the splendor of your decorations from first glance, you must know how to take care of them well. If protecting your artwork is something you value highly, keep in mind these tips on how to care for and upkeep them. By doing this, you can assure their safety, avoid paying for their restoration and increase your appreciation for them.

One of the most critical factors in how to take care of paintings is to be consistent with them. You can get as creative as you want, but don't let the creativeness fade away as time goes by!
