Mindanao’s Transport Expansion: For A Better Economic Future | Condo Investing

Mar 06, 2022

Modes of transportation are a benefit to those that need to send products from one location to another for a low cost and in a short amount of time. There are several modes of transportation available, and one should select one that best suits his needs. As rapid population growth leads to increased economic needs and mobility for goods, services, and products transportation, it is a direct relationship between urban regions and their populations that they must fulfill the criterion for road and highway length deficiencies, as well as means of transportation, in the metropolitan area.

Different modes of transportation are well-available for the passenger in provinces and more advantageously in metropolitan areas. It is the right of the passenger to choose what will be the mode that would bring him/her to their destination as fast as possible. Sometimes, comfort and convenience are sacrificed in order to meet the time in school, work, or events. As a result, public transit and railway transportation have become more convenient modes of transportation in the Philippines.

As it has become increasingly important in transporting commodities around our country, our government present the Build Build Build Project (BBB)  which the administration aims to usher in the “Golden age of infrastructure” in the Philippines. Lack of infrastructure has long been identified as the “Achilles’ heel” of Philippine economic development. Part of this project is the development of different road transportation in different areas of our country. One of the locations of this project is the area of Mindanao. Known as the second largest island next to Luzon, Mindanao is known as ‘the land of promise’ because of its rich biodiversity and natural resources. The government aimed to open the area and give more access to more economic opportunities, hoping for great and intensive benefits for the people of Mindanao.

Apart from land transportation upgrades such as paving dirt roads, rebuilding broken road sections, widening existing highways, adding surface overlays, and replacing and strengthening bridges. The government is focusing on a larger build build build project in Mindanao's transportation sector, with the goal of achieving great poverty and achieving long-term economic sustainability.

"Completion of the committed projects for Mindanao is one of the advocacies that I will embrace; we need a Mindanaoan who came from an inferior area who understands its need, and we need a Mindanaoan who came from an inferior area who understands its need, and we need a Mindanaoan who understands its need." said by the Former Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) Secretary Emmanuel Piñol citing the major projects -- Davao-Samal Bridge connector and Mindanao Railway Project. As it would provide a vital link to trade and tourism for both areas through reduced transport costs and faster flow of people, goods, and resources.

One of the lists is the ongoing project which is the Panguil Bay Bridge Project in Northern Mindanao it is the construction of the 3.169-kilometer bridge road which is moving ahead, with bored piles for the piers and abutments halfway done. In the report to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). The project will require 54 drilled piles for the 32 piers, two (2) abutments in Tangub City, Misamis Occidental, and Tubod, Lanao Del Norte, as well as two (2) pylons for the main bridge. One of the key infrastructure projects implemented by the DPWH - UPMO Roads Management Cluster 2 is the 7.38 billion Panguil Bay Bridge Project (RMC 2).

The Land travel between Tangub City, Misamis Occidental, and Tubod, Lanao del Norte, is estimated to be reduced from two and a half hours to just seven minutes thanks to the Panguil Bay Bridge. It will also cut travel time between Cagayan De Oro and Iligan and Tangub and the northern Zamboanga Region by half. It will accelerate the economic growth in the Mindanao regions by ensuring seamless transportation of goods and services.

Approximately 200 people have been employed as a result of the project, who are safely working at full speed despite the pandemic's hurdles. When the bridge superstructure works commence, the workforce required is estimated to exceed 500.

Aside from the bridge project, the government also highlighted the Mindanao railway project- Mindanao Railway: Tagum-Davao-Digos (MRP-TDD). A 100-kilometer section of the Mindanao Railway's 830-kilometer network. The Mindanao Railway will link important cities, seaports, and economic zones, enabling for speedier passenger and freight traffic. In its first year, the TDD segment is scheduled to service approximately 100,000 passengers each day.Once operational in 2022, it is intended to reduce travel time between Tagum City, Davao del Norte to Digos City, Davao del Sur from 3.5 hours to 1.3 hours.

The Mindanao Railway Project's MRP-TDD segment is the first of three segments. The project's design and construction will commence in the third quarter of next year and was finished by the end of 2021 last year.

"The MRP-TDD will reduce travel time by two (2) hours, with up to six (6) trains per hour," says Cesar Chavez, DOTr Undersecretary for Rails.

The MRP-TDD is projected to make transit in the corridor not only faster, but also safer, more convenient, and comfortable.

There will be 8 stations namely; Tagum; Carmen; Panabo; Mudiang; Davao Terminal; Toril; Sta. Cruz; as well as Digos. In Tagum, a 10-hectare depot will be constructed. The rail route will have a single track, with potential for additional lines and electrification in the future. Six 5-car passenger trains (Diesel Multiple Units) with three spare cars, four locomotives, and 15 freight cars will be on board.

Transportation has played a significant part in the development of communities from the dawn of civilization. It enables communication, trade, exchange between societies and localities, and therefore, it is extremely important for its development of it. This has become the key that aids in transporting goods to dispersed consumers in various locations, bridges the gap between producers and consumers, and makes it easier to distribute goods to consumers at low cost and in a timely manner. Transportation encourages specialization and labor division. It benefits individuals who are involved in it financially, and it has been shown to be an alternative source of work for those who are looking for it.

Transportation, Infrastructure are the inheritors of the modern future. They are the symbolism of a prosperous and well sustained economic nation. Thus, the importance of transport cannot be denied. Therefore, it is the need of modern times to enhance, innovate, develop and make effective plans for our future.

This will ultimately result in the development of society as a whole and make people more prosperous and aware of each other and their surroundings.
