What is the New Pasig River Expressway (PAREX) Project?

May 25, 2022

The Philippines is composed of multiple islands that are well interconnected in different forms of bodies of water. This creates an endless flow towards other islands brought by the majestic nature system, making it by the sea, lakes, and rivers.

Metro Manila is the heart of the Philippines providing services like jobs, houses, and daily structure for the 16 cities involved – Manila, Quezon City, Caloocan, Las Piñas, Makati, Malabon, Mandaluyong, Marikina, Muntinlupa, Navotas, Parañaque, Pasay, Pasig, San Juan, Taguig, Valenzuela, and Pateros City. Many of the said cities are seen to be interconnected with the bodies of water that are well needed and now a necessity for many.

One of the many forms of the given body of water is the Pasig River, situated in the City of Pasig. The river of Pasig has been shedding light in the Philippines that intertwines the body of water coming from Laguna de Bay to one of the most serene bays in Metro Manila, Manila Bay. Its river is almost 26 kilometers long while cutting the part surrounding it into northern and southern halves, especially the City of Manila and the surrounding areas. The Pasig River is also known to have its tributaries (smaller streams of the body of water that are connected), the Marikina River, and San Juan River, a few that are also seen in the heart of the Philippines, Metro Manila.

The Pasig River has been of great help, especially to the local communities surrounding it. The Pasig River has been serving its stories and aiding since the time of the Spaniards as it has been an immense transport route and source of water. Pasig River has been set to be one of the majestic bodies of water in the heart of the Philippines. It is strategically situated in Metro Manila, a great help to many. The upflowing clean and accessible water has been used by many of the communities, and its locals, may it be for fishing, showering, and even laundry but unfortunately, the given negligence and its reforming development surrounding. The river has been used and abused, which caused its negligence, whether it may be the improper disposal of trash or the given water damage by the cities connecting the body of water, thus creating a huge impact on the ecological basis of the said river. The river that has once been giving its unlimited supply and aid to many communities has now been halted as its current state was not meant for its past purposes. The vast improvement of the cities surrounding it also had a major impact on sustaining the ability of the river to maintain its beauty and giving the needed help as it before did.

The Pasig River is now considered one of the most polluted rivers as its state continued to decline in the 1990s when it was declared to be biologically dead, unfortunately. The once river that sustained livelihood to many was too damaged to have its purpose served many. Unfortunately, the Philippines is leading with 28% of the given rivers that pollute with global plastic problems. As the given Pasig River has been a significant river and source to many, the government has opted to build the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC) to fully eradicate and revive the given river to its best capacity for the Filipinos who are in dire need of the loss of livelihood.

The Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC) is a Philippine government agency tasked to establish and oversee the given acts of the local and national governments to aid the given rehabilitation of the river. As the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC) is supported by many in ways to rehabilitate the river, mainly to one of its best-given purposes, the luxury of its location in connecting different places into one, the Pasig River Expressway Project (PAREX) is born.

The Pasig River Expressway Project (PAREX) purpose is to give easy and time-efficient ways to its commuters, as the given land mine of heavy traffic is seen all over the surrounding cities in the Pasig River. The Pasig River Expressway Project (PAREX) aims to have the direct links between the western and eastern cities surrounding, the decongestion of the given heavy traffic in R-10, EDSA, and C-5. The Pasig River Expressway Project is a 19.37-kilometer, all-elevated, six-lane expressway that runs the length of the Pasig River. The project will begin on Radial Road 10 in Manila and end with a connection to the South East Metro Manila. Circumferential Road 6 intersects with the expressway. From Nagtahan to Plaza Azul, the project will connect and use a 2.7-kilometer section of Skyway Stage 3. The Pasig River Expressway Project (PAREX) is differentiated into 3 (three) segments, Segment Coverage Length (km) - Segment 1 R10 to MMSS3-Plaza Azul 5.740 (MMSS3 Segment MMSS3-Plaza Azul to MMSS3-San Juan River (2.70)), Segment 2 MMSS3-San Juan River to C-5 7.325, Segment 3 C-5 to SEMME (C-6) 6.300, totaling into the length of 19.365.
