What is Wordle? The New Word Game Explained | Condo Tips

Feb 16, 2022

If you've been on Twitter in the last week or so, you've probably seen an increase in individuals posting Tetris-style blocks made up of yellow, green, and grey squares. Two random numbers and the made-up term "Wordle" are frequently displayed with the graphic.

These tweets, according to a quick examination, are the personal outcomes of a game that is currently sweeping social media.

Wordle was designed by Josh Wardle, a software programmer in New York City, for his boyfriend Palak Shah, who enjoys word games. Wardle and Shah played the game for months before Wardle decided to share it with the rest of the world, according to The New York Times. He first made it available to the general public in October, with 90 people participating on November 1st. The game had over 300,000 participants on January 2, 2022.

While Wordle is a daily word game that only allows users to play for one round each day, it has become so popular that one Twitter user has built an unrestricted version.

What is Wordle?

Wordle is a basic game at its core. The goal is for you to predict a five-letter word in six tries. Each time you guess, you'll be notified which of your letters are in the target word and whether they're in the correct spot. That's all there is to it.

It's accessed through the Wordle website, is ad-free, and can only be finished once each day. That's right, there will be no three-hour Wordle sessions while you're meant to be working. Every day, there is just one puzzle to finish, and everyone completes the same one. At midnight, it will reset. Still, one of the greatest Wordle substitutes, such as the amazing Absurdle, can help you pass the time. You can now play any of the previous Wordle games as many times as you want.

Is Wordle free? The New York Times stated on January 31 that it had purchased Wordle, but that new and existing players will be able to play for free at first. It did not specify when Wordle will be included in its apps.

One of the main reasons for Wordle's success is that social media sharing is encouraged, yet in a way that doesn't give away the solution to anyone who hasn't completed the puzzle that day. When you click the Share button, you'll see a grid of yellow and green squares that indicate the path you walked, but no actual letters.

Wordle Rules

There aren't many rules in Wordle because it's such a simple game. But here's how to play Wordle.

  1. You must guess the Wordle in six or fewer attempts.
  2. Every word you type must be in the list of words. It hasn't been revealed, but it's most likely based on a dictionary.
  3. A correct letter glows in the dark.
  4. When a correct letter is placed in the incorrect location, it turns yellow, otherwise, it’s green.
  5. The color of an erroneous letter changes to gray.
  6. Letters can be reused multiple times.
  7. You must demonstrate your wit by sharing your Wordle after you've finished it.

Wordle Strategy

  1. You'll want to pick one of the top Wordle starting words. AZYGY is a smart word and a strong Scrabble pick, but it's unlikely to be the correct answer here because it lacks many common letters. You may want to start with TEARS because it includes an 'A' and an 'E, as well as three common consonants in sensible locations, but you can also opt to STARE; same letters, but words ending in S are really uncommon in Wordle, making it a better initial pick.
  2. When you press enter, you'll notice which letters are completely accurate or partially correct, meaning they're in the target word but in the incorrect location.
  3. Next, come up with a new word that contains all of the letters you've already determined are accurate. Letters can appear in a word several times, but unless you have a strong reason to believe you know what the word is, you would keep to a single entry for each. At this point, use ordinary letters instead of Qs, Zs, Xs, and even Ks, Hs, Js, and so on. You'll be fine if you stick to letters with a low Scrabble value.

Can you cheat at Wordle?

Yes, you certainly can. But clearly, you shouldn't.

If you really want to fool yourself and your unfortunate social media buddies, you can easily load Wordle in an incognito browser window, complete it as many times as you need, then return to the window where you're signed in and input the proper word.

Why is Wordle so addictive?

Wordle isn't that different from a lot of other word games on the App Store or Google Play Store, but it takes a different approach to you, your time, and your money.

Indeed, you play a lot of word games, and most of them are ruined by excessive advertising and repeated exhortations (if not extortions) to buy in-app purchases.

Wordle, on the other hand, is not like that. It doesn't want to earn money off of you, and it doesn't want you to play for hours on end.

Wardle told the BBC, "I'm a little wary of smartphone apps that demand your attention and send you push notifications to attract more of your attention."

That is, in fact, another refreshing aspect of it. Binge-culture is extremely real, and you, like most others, will watch a Netflix show or play a video game in large bursts over a day or two, usually when you should be sleeping. You can't do that with Wordle because one problem a day is so insignificant, but it keeps the game fresh.

Are there other games like Wordle?

There are a plethora of other Wordle-like games available, ranging from outright clones to those that are plainly inspired by it but don't go so far as to rip it off. Right now, people’s favorite of these is Absurdle, which follows a similar pattern but adds a nice twist.
