The city of Makati traces its origin to a pre-hemisphere village known as San Pedro de Makati. It was named after the saint of the area, Lakan Tagkan. When Americans took control of Luzon from the Spaniards in the early twentieth century, San Pedro De Makati was declared part of Rizal province on June 11, 1901 under Commonwealth Act No. 137. San Pedro de Makati, remains a third-class agricultural city, where the main livelihood comes from growing rice and producing horse fodder. In 1914, Philippine Legislative Law No. 2390 shortened the city's name to the current name of Makati.
Now Makati City is located in the heart of the vast capital of Manila. A master-planned mixed-use community and has been described as a city composed of three areas: the central business district, the old town or the area of Poblacion and the area of The Fort of Bonifacio. Makati City is known as the “Wall Street of the Philippines” because it is one of the busiest highways in Metro Manila, running through the heart of the Makati Central Business District, Epifanio delos Santos Avenue or also known as EDSA and other Metropolitan Avenues and Highways.
The City is known for its high-end shopping centers with high-end fashion brands, restaurants, and hotels, and is home to affluent Filipinos. Makati is considered the center of financial, commercial and economic industries. Makati is the country's undisputed financial center and commercial center, and is a preferred destination for investors according to the Makati government website. It is home to the headquarters of 40 percent (40%) of the top 1,000 multinational and local companies, 400 bank branches, more than 1,000 BPO offices, 54 foreign embassies and 34 consulates. Also, the city hosts nineteen (19) international organizations, together with the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and also the UNDP.
