Swimming Safety Tips in Condo Pool or When Traveling

Apr 07, 2022

The heat is on. Finally, we have the opportunity to spend extended periods of time outside our homes. From sunrise to sunset, we longed to be outside in the fresh air, ecstatic in the sun's rays and warmth. Spending quality time with your family and friends is the greatest approach to make the most of this summer. Summer is a fun time to "create" lifelong memories. The days are longer in the summer, giving us more opportunities to spend time leisurely.

Now that the summer season has come through, resorts and beaches will surely be full of people again.  The water is the most inviting place to be as the weather warms. The beach and the pool are the best places to cool off and have fun when the sun shines. Summer is jam-packed with exciting water-based events and activities, making it an ideal time for kids to improve their swimming abilities and enjoy.

Along with enjoying our water activities, it is important to ensure that we are out of danger by following the swimming rules, etiquette, and safety tips in the swimming pool.

Here are some beach and pool safety tips to ensure safety and an enjoyable experience in the water.

1. Always Supervise Children

It is understandable that parents need to unwind as well. When your children are in the water, however, it is time to be cautious. As a general rule, a parent should always be within arm's reach of a young child. This rule applies whether they are swimming in a pool, a lake, the ocean, or a bathtub. Parents should stay close to their children and keep an eye on them at all times. Supervising children is one of the most important pool safety tips because things can get very dangerous. If there are other adults present, you can take turns watching the pool so that everyone has an equal opportunity to relax. Working together to protect your children is the most effective way to avoid an accident.

2. Wear a Life Vest

Swimmers who are inexperienced should always wear a Coast Guard-certified life jacket when near water. There are numerous products on the market that claim to help children stay afloat, such as water wings, floaties, pool noodles, and so on, but they are not a substitute for life preservers or life-saving devices in an actual emergency. Use this only when a parent or another responsible adult is within arm's reach of the child. Also, remember that wearing a life jacket or other flotation device is never an excuse to disregard other water safety precautions. When it comes to staying safe around water, life jackets alone are unsatisfactory.

3. Stay Within the Designated Swimming Area

Swimming in a pool, ocean, or lake is dangerous unless you stay within the designated swim areas. Teach your children about ropes and why they are used to divide a pool. Do not encourage a child to swim in water deeper than their abilities will allow. Always follow the safety tips in the swimming pool posted in the area and guidelines established by local lifeguards when swimming in a lake or ocean.

4. Don’t Drink Alcoholic Beverages

This advice is primarily for older children and their parents. As children grow into teenagers, discussing alcohol with them becomes increasingly important. Alcohol impairs decision-making, coordination, and balance. It hinders a person's ability to swim and can even cause a drop in body temperature. This is also part of the pool party safety tips as alcohol is often seen at parties or events. Parents should exercise caution as well. Consume no alcohol while supervising your children in the water. It can not only cause you to become distracted, but it can also render you unable to function properly in the event of an emergency. Avoiding alcohol is an essential pool party safety tip.

5. Avoid Playing Breath Holding Games

Everyone should not hold their breath for long periods of time while swimming, as this can lead to drowning and other serious consequences. Make it clear to children that competing to see who can hold their breath the longest underwater, as well as other similar games, are dangerous and should not be part of any water-related activities. A swimmer is more likely to pass out underwater if they hold their breath for too long or hyperventilate before going underwater, which means they breathe deeper or faster. To avoid problems during practices or meets, children who swim competitively should learn proper breathing techniques.

6. Don’t Jump Instantly in the Water

You should enter the water by testing it out or walking by feet first. When someone jumps or dive headfirst into shallow water, they can sustain serious injuries. Everyone should learn and understand how to enter and exit the pool properly. If you are interested in jumping and diving, make sure to know the proper technique and point out areas where it is safe to do so. If your pool does not have a designated diving area, do not allow diving, no matter how deep the water is.

7. Never Swim Alone

Swimming should be done only when a lifeguard is on duty. Lifeguards do more than just keep an eye on the people in the pool, lake, or ocean. Their job also entails keeping an eye on the water and advising swimmers on any safety concerns or questionable conditions that may arise. They are also trained to react quickly when something unexpected occurs. In addition to swimming with a lifeguard nearby, a good rule for both children and adults is to swim with a buddy. Instruct your child to always swim with a friend or sibling so that they can keep an eye out for one another if their parents aren't present in the pool.

Swimming as much as possible is the best way to make the most of the summer heat in the Philippines. The weather is warm, the beaches and resorts are beautiful, the local pool is calling, and the opportunities for fun and adventure are limitless. This is the time to enjoy but safety always comes first.
