Tips for a Perfect Color Scheme for your Condo this Christmas

Dec 05, 2021

Condos are great for people who don't want yard work and prefer interior decor rather than exterior decorating.

People also love condos because they're convenient and easy to maintain–perfect for busy professionals with hectic schedules or young parents with little time on their hands!

To help you create a condo that's comfortable and perfect for your personality, we rounded up the perfect color scheme for your home this Christmas.

Use colors according to your condo's position

  • Condo units that are facing the north or northwest direction should use cooler colors like blue, green, and purple. These colors will help keep the unit cool in summer and warm in winter.
  • Condo units that are facing the southwest should go for bright red, orange, or yellow. These colors will help to keep your unit bright throughout the year.
  • Condos which face northeast should use brown as their primary color scheme. This color sets a calm atmosphere in your condo and can be used with any other color palette you choose. Brown also absorbs light making it perfect for rooms that need to be darker like a study room or an indoor gymnasium in your condominium property.
  • Condos that face southeast should use lighter colors like white and cream. These colors will help keep the unit cooler in summer and warmer during winter as they will reflect light.
  • Condos facing the southwest should avoid using red, orange, and yellow as they can make the unit appear smaller and darker. Colors like dark blue, green, or purple are highly recommended for wall paints or floor tiles. This can give your unit a large appearance which is ideal for those who have limited space in their condo property. Using these colors on your windows can also give an illusion of space–giving you the feel of a larger home rather than that of a condo unit.
  • Condo units that are facing the north should use a neutral color like white or brown so that it does not clash with the colors you have already used in the rest of your home.
  • Condos facing east should avoid using yellow, orange, and red as these are considered fiery colors which could give an impression of high maintenance. Instead choose to use blue, green, and purple to set a calm atmosphere.
  • Condos facing southwest should use lighter shades of blue, green, or purple as these are best for reflecting light which will help keep the unit bright. Avoid using red, orange, and yellow as this can give your condo a smaller image than you want it to be.
  • Condos facing west should use totally opposite colors. The west direction is considered as the water element according to Feng Shui and it is best to use colors like blue, green, and purple. These colors are also good for reflecting light–making your unit appear bright throughout the year.

Make it in sync with shades

When choosing colors make sure that they are of similar shades. It would look weird if you choose a light shade of blue on one part of your wall and then decide to paint another part with a darker shade of blue! Also, refrain from using super light shades of colors as these can sometimes look like white and make your unit appear less vibrant than it really is.

Check your home environment

For the most effective outcome it is best to check the color scheme of your condo unit and your home's environment. There are two different ways that you can do this. The first and the more obvious way is to take a look at all of your appliances, fluorescent lights, light switches, table, and floor tiles, and even the walls that are on your property. Each appliance or light needs to be in a separate color in order for it to be effective but make sure that they are of similar shades.

The other method is more subtle. All you have to do is take a look at your neighbors. Compare the colors of your condo unit with that of your neighbors. If you see that both of them are using similar colors and shades then that would be the best way to go. For example, if your neighbor has a purple wall in their unit and you have a purple wall, then they must also be using purple as their primary color scheme.

Consider your appliances

When purchasing new appliances or light fixtures make sure that they are compatible with the colors which you have chosen for your home. This is especially important for new light fixtures as not all light fixtures will be compatible with different types of bulbs or LED lights.

Your furniture matters

When purchasing new furniture or interior decor make sure that it is of the same color scheme as your home. For example, if you have a blue accent wall in your condo unit then you should go for blue accent furniture in your home.

Before buying new furniture make sure that you choose dark-colored pieces which will blend in with the color scheme of your home and will not stand out like colorful furniture from previous decades would have done. Colored furniture can be distracting especially if it is colorful as this can leave a big impact especially on children who often play around on the seats or floors.

If you choose a dark color and then add colorful decorative cushions or throw pillows to your seat or cushion this will help to give your home the effect of having warm natural colors and will make it seem more inviting.

Use artworks and frames

When hanging artwork or pictures on your walls make sure that they are of the same color scheme as your home. You can always use frames to separate them from the wall but make sure that they are compatible with the colors used in the rest of your home otherwise the effect will be lost.

Choose the best type of paint

When choosing paint colors for your walls use high gloss paints as they will reflect light and give a better sense of space on a smaller wall than would a low gloss paint. Also, glossy paints will also help to keep your walls looking clean and newer longer.

When choosing paint colors for your doors, use flat paint colors to give you the feeling that you are living in a house rather than a condo unit. Use flat shades of green, blue, and red for doors.

Plan your condo designs

If you are planning to redecorate your home or if you want to use new furniture make sure that you do not install it in a room that does not go with the color scheme of your condo unit. For example, if you have a blue accent wall in your condo unit try to avoid placing any blue accent furniture in this area if possible. This would make it look out of place.

It is also advised not to install colored furniture in these areas as children and pets may get attracted to the shiny colors.

Neutral colors might be for you

If you have a family and children in your home you might want to consider purchasing a rug of a neutral color like grey, beige or brown which would blend well with your condo unit's color scheme. Also, it is suggested that you avoid using colorful rugs or carpets as they could often be bothersome for little ones. This is especially true for kids who love to climb on furniture and rugs that are colored or patterned.

Opt to use wooden tables and shelves

Consider choosing dark wooden tables and shelves rather than glass or marble. These will not reflect the strong sunlight and you will be able to enjoy the natural light from your windows without having to worry about your furniture getting damaged due to direct sunlight exposure.

It has been proven that color can affect the amount of horsepower you can achieve in your work environment. It is also important to keep in mind that the color of your condo unit's walls and furniture have an effect on the mood and feel of your home.
